Chhir Chot – Kashmiri Breakfast

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Breakfast breaks my head every single day. At times, I am bored of usual breakfast like Idli, Dosa, Cereals or Milkshakes. Though I love overnight oats, I badly crave for Indian food some days. I was cranky whenever mom prepared idlis for breakfast and always found it hard to eat as a child. But then, once I grew up, I found out the health benefits of idli and loved this wholesome food. On some gloomy days, the inner child in me pops out and wish to have those puffy Pooris, Ghee flavored Pongal and Creamy Khicidi. I am not a morning person and hence, preparing exotic dishes in the morning seems to be improbable. I needed an easy unusual recipe for my weekday morning. That’s how I stumbled upon this Kashmiri Pancakes – Chhir Chot.

Chhir Chot is an authentic Kashmiri pancakes prepared using rice flour and ajwain seeds. Chhir chot is usually served as a tea time snack but that doesn’t mean you can’t have it for breakfast/dinner.  When there is no batter available in your kitchen, then it is an easy savior snack which can be prepared with the common items available in your pantry. Serve chhir chot with masala chai and enjoy your evening!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Rice Flour
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Ajwain seeds
  • 1 cup water (adjust as per consistency)
  • Oil for dosa

Method.

  • In a bowl, sieve rice flour. Add salt and ajwain seeds. Add water little by little and form a batter. It should be of dosa batter/pancake consistency neither thick nor watery.
  • Heat tawa over a high flame. Once the tawa is hot, reduce the flame
  • Fetch a ladle of batter and spread it in a round shape evenly on the tawa. Drizzle oil on the sides and cover with a lid.  Cook until the bottom layer turns light brown. Once can see the pores on the upper side. Ensure the upper side is covered with a lid. This prevents the upper layer from becoming dry.
  • Apply bit of oil on the upper side and flip it. Cook until the other side turns light brown.
  • Serve Chhir Chot with hot masala chai and chutney of your choice
