Gopalkala

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Gopalkala is prepared using beaten rice/aval/poha and a comforting dish for toddlers and adults. There is a saying that the poha is put inside the handi which is hung in the air and broken during the Janmashtami celebrations. Poha is easily digestible and provides enough energy thus making it a perfect breakfast option. Moreover, poha is rich in iron and carbohydrates. Poha has low glutens and a great option for diabetic people. This Gopalkala is a Karnataka delicacy and can be easily prepared in few minutes. Hence, if you are stuck with work like me and have a twisted ankle, then this sounds great option. There is no need to stand for a long time in the kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Thin/Thick Poha/ Aval/Beaten rice
  • 1 medium sized cucumber chopped
  • ¼ cup Grated coconut (I have used ¼ cup as I don’t like coconut much)
  • ½ cup Yogurt
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee
  • ½ teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 2 Green chilies chopped
  • ½ inch Ginger finely chopped

Method:

  • Wash poha in running water and place it in colander for the water to drain completely
  • In a bowl, add washed poha, chopped cucumber, coconut, yogurt, salt, sugar and combine them well
  • Meanwhile, heat a kadai over medium flame. Add a spoon of ghee to the kadai.
  • Once the oil is hot, add cumin seeds and allow it to sizzle
  • Add green chilies and ginger to the kadai. Fry them till cumin seeds turn brownish.
  • Combine them with the poha in the bowl and mix them well.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
