Oats Khichdi

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Oats Khichdi – Oats cooked with Moong dal and vegetables flavored with Indian Spices; a simple comforting healthy meal!

Are you looking for a quick fix for dinner? And a healthy one too? Then, book mark this recipe as you are gonna love it. I hated oats until I heard about the benefits of it from my Doctor. Since then, I have been experimenting different recipes using oats. Though it doesn’t have a taste of its own, it easily blends itself with the other ingredients added to it like Rava.  I love oats porridge but my favorite is khichdi – Oats cooked with dal and vegetables flavored with spices – a hearty healthy meal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Oats
  • ½ cup Moong Dal
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • ½ teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 10 Peppercorns
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, chopped into pieces
  • 1 teaspoon Grated Ginger
  • 1 Green Chili, chopped
  • 1 big Onion, chopped
  • 1 Tomato, chopped
  • ¼ cup Carrot, chopped into small pieces
  • ¼ cup Green Peas
  • ¼ cup Potato, cubed
  • ½ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Red Chilly Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Garam Masala Powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • 3 cups Water
  • Handful of Coriander leaves, chopped

Ingredients:

  • Soak Moong dal in water for about 30 minutes. Wash thoroughly with water and drain the excess water. Set aside
  • In a pressure cooker, add oil and heat over medium flame. Once the oil is hot, add cumin seeds, pepper corns and let it splutter.
  • Add garlic and grated ginger. Saute until the raw smell goes off.
  • Add onions and cook until they become translucent. Add tomatoes and cook until they become mushy.
  • Now, add vegetables and spices. Combine them together.
  • Add oats and dal to the vegetables.
  • Add water; Sprinkle salt.
  • Cook for 3 whistles. Remove from the flame and allow the pressure to release.
  • Serve Khichdi piping hot and enjoy a complete meal.
